The late mayor Adamowicz's online collection box is the best proof of the enduring power of solidarity. The result of the collection surpassed expectations - nearly 16 000 000 PLN raised. And it all started with a goal of a modest 1000 PLN...
As soon as we heard about the initiative to launch an online collection in the name of the late Paweł Adamowicz, who died after he had been seriously injured while on stage for the "Light to the Sky" event at the Gdańsk edition of the Grand Finale fundraiser, we wanted to use the money raised to buy equipment for hospitals in the city he has committed his life to
It seems that we have gone a full, beautiful circle - when 27 years ago we invited people to "play" with our charity we had one aim - to raise enough money to support one children's hospital. The generosity of people surpassed our expectations and we were able to buy equipment for all cardiac surgery wards in the country.
The final result of the online fundraiser was as surprising for us like that first ever collection. The Facebook collection, held at the initiative of one of the supporters of our charity, reached the mark of well over 3 000 000 EUR. For this sum, we aim to buy medical equipment for specialized children's hospitals and wards in Pomeranian Voivodship. We want to celebrate the mayor's commitment to our charity and his love for the city of Gdańsk.
We will begin the work - our medical team at the Foundation will be joined by medical experts who will help us purchase the best equipment for Pomeranian hospitals. We have already made the first step - we have made an order to buy a new ambulance for St Wojciech hospital in Gdańsk. We are in touch with other medical facilities in the region and we are researching the needs of these hospitals.
This wonderful initiative can teach us loads about the power of solidarity and the power to do good. Even though the fundraiser was held online it served to show us a valuable lesson about civic society.
