Today we celebrate the Ophthalmology Day
On 9 May in Poland, we celebrate the Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmology Day – a very special date for the GOCC Foundation. Since 2001 we have run the Prevention of Retinopathy of Prematurity Programme!
The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity made the safety of healthcare staff its top priority. Medical staff put themselves at risk to save lives, and we are committed to providing doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other frontline medical workers with personal protection equipment. We decided to send the first parcels with face masks, face shields, disinfecting liquid, and soap to care homes which provide medical care to the most vulnerable patients, ob-gyn wards, and hospitals tasked with caring for COVID-19 patients.
The most significant part of the equipment consists of 1 600 000 three plier surgical masks. We are still awaiting the delivery of 2 000 000 face masks, but we decided to send the first batch of masks immediately.
The charity is committed to COVID-19 Relief Initiative. The GOCC has already purchased equipment for PLN 36 000 000 (EUR 7 900 000). Apart from face masks and face shields, the charity purchases PPE sets, coveralls and medical equipment for isolation wards such as ICU beds, medical ventilators, and cardiac monitors.

On 5 December, we organized the 68th Open Tender dedicated to the aim of the 30th Grand Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, i.e. paediatric ophthalmology.
Lidia Niedźwiedzka-Owsiak, who is the director of the medical division of the GOCC Foundation, was awarded an Honoris Causa at the Poznań University of Medical Sciences. This recognition was given in appreciation of her commitment to upholding the highest standards in healthcare.
